Laura Gardner-Muenchow, ALA 1982
Laura Gardner-Muenchow graduated in ALA’s second full class (1982) and recently married Richard Muenchow, who attended ALA and Emmanuel Lutheran School. Laura earned her degree from University of Phoenix. She now works at Banner Health as a program manager overseeing Physician Leadership Development. In addition to helping physicians develop leadership skills to serve patients better, she also is a certified executive coach and provides executive coaching.
Melissa (Nagel) Flahart, ALA 1987
Melissa (Nagel) Flahart has been an RN for 25 years. After graduating from ALA in 1987, she earned her BS in Nursing. She has worked in a variety of nursing fields, while currently serving as a clinical manager for Optum, a division of United Health Group. She supervises 17 oncology case managers in Phoenix and Dallas. Melissa is passionate about “helping people live their best lives and get the best care possible.” She loves nursing because it has flexibility to do different things at different times to meet the needs of raising a family.
Elaina (Head) Wendt, ALA 2001
2001 graduate, Elaina (Head) Wendt, is married to high school sweetheart and classmate, Zach Wendt. Elaina earned her BS in Occupational Therapy and an MA in Biomedical Ethics. She works at a Phoenix hospital as a senior manager in the therapy department and was recently honored as one of the top 10% of leaders in the company. Zach and Elaina (and family) shared their faith earlier this year when they built houses as part of a life-changing “1Mission” trip.
Amy (Press) Parrish, ALA 2003
Using her nursing degree in 4 different states has been a highlight for Amy (Press) Parrish. Amy is a 2003 ALA alumnus who earned her BS in nursing from Viterbo University and has been a working nurse for 11 years. Amy lives in Washington with her husband, David. They have 2 daughters and one more on the way. Amy has always worked the night shift and says that “minus the sleep, it’s great!”
Katie Greening , ALA 2005
Katie Greening graduated from ALA in 2005 and earned her EMT certification from Glendale CC. She originally worked as an EMT for Southwest Ambulance in the Northwest Valley of Phoenix. In 2011 she moved into the emergency room. She now works for Abrazo Health at a “stand alone” emergency room that serves Peoria and Lake Pleasant. She recently began classes that will lead to a BS in Nursing and hopefully a career in pediatric oncology. A highlight of Katie’s career was receiving a “Life-Saving Award” as a result of saving a police officer who was experiencing a medical emergency.
Meghan Shoop, ALA 2006
“Travel” is the key word for 2006 graduate Meghan Shoop. She earned her BS in Nursing and has worked the last four years as a pediatric travel nurse. She has experience in general and emergency pediatrics, as well as pediatric and neonatal ICU, while also serving in 10 different states. Meghan loves to travel outside of work as well. This year, she will fulfill her goal of visiting all seven continents before she turns 30, and will have visited 40 countries by the end of the summer!
Annie (Franzmeier) Szabo , ALA 2007
Annie (Franzmeier) Szabo is a 2007 ALA graduate. She is a Licensed Master of Social Work who has served in several areas of social work – jail systems, courts, adult probation officer and with veterans. Annie is now at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in the Nursery Intensive Care Unit. She works with parents and babies who were born too soon, and might be too small or sick to go home right away. Annie’s husband is a paramedic/firefighter and they have 2 wonderful sons.
Jesse Mangelsdorf, ALA 2008

The Mangelsdorf family boasts 3 generations of dentists practicing in Kingman, AZ.
Jesse graduated from ALA in 2008. He earned his BS in Biology and Chemistry from NAU, and his DDS degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Jesse works with his father, Timothy, in the family practice started by his grandfather.
Luke, class of 2011, also received his BS in Biology from NAU and is a third year dental student at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland. He plans on going into private practice following graduation. Both Jesse and Luke love the concept of general dentistry which allows them to serve a wide variety of patients with differing needs. They believe an emphasis on oral health information and screenings is vital to public health. Jesse considers it a privilege treating some of the same patients served by his grandfather 30 years ago!
Ian Meshay, ALA 2011
Ian Meshay, class of 2011, earned his BS from ASU in Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology. He is in medical school at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine Phoenix. Ian is a third year resident working through major medical specialties at various hospitals in the Phoenix area. After graduation in 2020, he plans on entering either a 3-year Emergency Medicine or a 5-year Orthopedic Surgery residency.
Annie Berguin, ALA 2012
North Dakota is the new home for 2012 alumnus Annie Berguin. She has her BS in nursing and currently is a registered nurse at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND. She works on the medical oncology floor treating a wide variety of patients. She is chemotherapy certified and works with graduate nurses as a preceptor. Annie loves her patients and co-workers! While working with cancer patients can be very emotionally challenging, Annie feels blessed to have numerous opportunities to share the Gospel and talk about the hope of eternity in heaven with our Savior.
Janie Unkefer, ALA 2013
Janie Unkefer earned her BS in Exercise and Sports Science from Point Loma University after graduating from ALA in 2013. In July, she will complete her MS in Kinesiology, specializing in Integrative Wellness. Janie is working as the athletic recruitment coordinator at Arizona Christian University. Janie is passionate about educating and increasing the health literacy of college students. Her goal is to become a professor who can impact all students, especially those not involved in activities. Janie believes she can empower and equip the next generation of fathers, mothers and young professionals so that they see health benefits through the positive lens of wellness.
Caitlin (Schaumberg) Massadeh, ALA 2014
Caitlin (Schaumberg) Massadeh graduated from ALA in 2014. She earned her BS in Nursing from GCU in less than 4 years. Caitlin works in the Neuro Progressive Care Unit at Banner Baywood. She is stroke certified, is very experienced dealing with seizure patients, and would like to eventually transition into Labor and Delivery. Caitlin recently found out that her supervisor is a member at Emmanuel Lutheran church who remembered Caitlin from her time at ALA. Caitlin recently wed fellow ALA alumnus Michael Massadeh (ALA 2014).
